Thinning the Herd??

Hi.  My name is Amy.  And I’m a Fabric Hoarder.  More specifically, a SCRAP hoarder.  And unfortunately, I don’t often do scrap quilts, so they just keep multiplying!!   Currently, I have two 30 gallon totes, chock-a-block full.

Scrap totes hiding under the Long Arm

I also have some that were sorted by color and jammed into bins.

untrimmed color bins

So, what to do?  Well, Mrs Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville is a true Scrap Queen!  She wrote a piece a year ago titled Fabric Herding.  It shows how SHE organizes the mess involved with quilting.  At the moment, I have no  need for all of the sizes she keeps, but I can still manage to do a bit of thinning on my own!

I have noticed that I use mostly 2.5″ strips.  Binding, bricks, etc.  So I grabbed the neutral bin and started chopping!

2.5" strips

There are a bunch of precut squares that someone gave me.  Not sure what I’ll do with them, but I’ll figure it out.  I ended up with a small stack of 4″x6″ postcard pieces, and some fat quarter-ish pieces that will end up with the rest of the FQ’s.  See how PRETTY this looks now?  Only took about 2 hours!!  LOL

So, what color should I move to next??!  Those big bins will take me forever.  I ALSO need to figure out how to convince clients to order SCRAP QUILTS!!!  I don’t have the time to make one and then try to sell it.

Speaking of which–there’s a quilt on the frame now.  Guess I should get to it.

Insane Applique

Finished product!!

It’s still super nasty outside, so I had to use the boys’ room.

I’m not really happy with the photo shoot–but I LOVE the way the quilt came out!!

I just couldn’t meander over all this hard work, so a semi-custom job it was.

Not every element had it’s own pattern, but enough that you can see the difference.

And I let the varigated thread “speak”.

Grecian Key design in the border.

“Water” pattern in the black borders, “wind” in the sky.

Special hearts in all 4 corners.

The back.

LOOK at all the crinkles!!

And a scrappy binding to match the rest of the madness.

Now, on to the next one!!!

better pictures of the denim purse

The birthday girl loved her purse!  I took a few pictures of her modeling it.  Minus her face!!  I won’t show other people’s children on such a public forum.

Maybe if I just nixed the zipper part, it wouldn’t be such a pain.  Not ALL purses have to close, do they??!!

Happy Birthday Rena and Collin

The Insane Applique quilt is for Collin.  We hit a snag, I’m afraid.  Messed up tensions.  I just finished ripping out all the bad stuff.  It was a mess.  But I’m going to have it reloaded by tonight, and should be binding it by Monday at the latest.

In the meantime, I needed a birthday gift for The Apprentice’s friend.  Cold (for us) and rainy=NOT dragging the boys to town.  Zebra scraps? Check.  Pink? Check.  Jeans that don’t fit and were unflattering when they did? CHECK!

Crappy lighting because of the rain.  Came out cute, though.  But I’ll NEVER do one like this again.

Why???  Because denim is THICK.  I broke 2 needles.  And we won’t discuss how much MORE ripping I had to do because of messed up stitches.

It’s not perfect, but it’s cute.  It’ll be good for a preteen girl!!  Even if it DID take me 5 solid hours!!!

Now, off to the next project!
